Averages, GPA, honor roll and rank
How overall figures are calculated, with worked examples.
How an overall figure is produced depends on your grading system’s aggregation setting.
Weighted average
Each subject gets a weighted average of its marks; the overall figure is the mean of those subject averages. Example: marks of 8 (weight 1), 9 (weight 2) and 6 (weight 1) give a subject average of (8 + 18 + 6) / 4 = 8.0.
Credit GPA
Each subject’s grade becomes grade points; the GPA is the credit-weighted average of those points. Example: a 4-credit A (4.0) and a 3-credit B (3.0) give (4.0 x 4 + 3.0 x 3) / (4 + 3) = 3.57. In High school, honors/AP/IB courses add a bonus (capped at 5.0); College is unweighted.
Honor roll and class rank
- Honor roll — awarded when the overall figure (average or GPA) meets the honor-roll threshold.
- Class rank — a student’s standing within their class, where ties share a rank (1, 2, 2, 4). It appears on the report/transcript.
